This orchid is called Coelogyne graminifolia, which means 'grass-like.' While it has certainly developed into a large, grass-like clump, its leaves are a bit too broad to truly fit the description. Unlike some Coelogynes that grow into specimen-sized plants, this one stays relatively small. Its 3 to 4 modest flowers, each about 6 cm in size, appear on very short spikes, usually around the edge of the pot. Any flowers that form deeper in the plant get hidden among the leaves, and even those at the edge are often concealed by the overhanging, strap-like foliage.
The flowers are fragrant with a soft, velvety white texture, but they have noticeable yellow, orange, and brown markings that can give them a somewhat muddy appearance, diminishing the otherwise clean, white look. Native to the Himalayas, Khasia Hills, and parts of Malaysia at low altitudes (below 1000m), this orchid is quite tough and easy to grow.
