From Mexico to Bolivia, Venezuela, French Guiana, Costa Rica, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago.  

Internodes

2–6 cm long, 1–3 cm diam.

Petiole sheath

deciduous; geniculum smooth, slightly terete, 2–5 cm long

Blades 

ovate to elliptical or oblong, widely cuneate to rounded or truncate at the base, sometimes peltate, obtuse to longacuminate at apex

Shingling in juvenile stage.  

Size

20 ft (5 m) plus in native habitat, 4 to 6 feet or more at home with pole.
