Monster alfaroi

This monstera is still extremely new to the plant trade.  The actual name alfaroi is given in recognition of the Costa Rican botanist Evelio Gerardo Alfaro Vindas from the Las Mellizas area of Puntarenas province, Costa Rica.  Evelio made one of the earliest herbarium collections of this species years ago.

Monstera alfaroi is endemic to Costa Rica in the central and south Pacific
regions, in the provinces of Puntarenas and San José, from Tarrazú south to Potrero Grande and the Fila Costeña.  Generally occurring at 1100–1500 m in elevation.  This monstera inhabits primary and secondary forests, on old growth trees usually with diameters greater than 45 cm.  Alfaroi is considered endangered in it's natural habitat due to the current agricultural practices.

As a juvenile, it is an appressed climber.  Meaning, it get's close to the trunk as uses a vining habit to climb, but alfaroi is not a shingler.  The adult plant is unique because it has a warty or bumpy appearance on the stems.  Adult leaves of M. alfaroi are among the largest of Costa Rican species of Monstera reaching over 90 cm long!
