Bulbophyllum lilacinum 

The lilac bulbophyllum (Bulbophyllum lilacinum) is a medium-sized, epiphytic orchid native to Malaysia and Thailand, thriving in warm to cool conditions. It is best grown mounted on tree fern, rock, or cork, with high humidity—making it an excellent choice for a terrarium. Its 6-inch inflorescences are adorned with small, lilac-spotted flowers that form a bushy, tail-like display. For optimal growth, provide slightly more shade than typical for most Bulbophyllum species.

Genus Description
Bulbophyllum is currently considered the most diverse genus of orchids, with over 1,500 described species. Found in all tropical areas on Earth, Bulbophyllums are morphologically and geographically diverse. Named for their bulbous leaves, all Bulbophyllums share common flower characteristics, including a hinged column that causes part of the flower to jiggle or bob, attracting pollinators. Many Bulbophyllums are pollinated by flies, which are drawn to flowers that often look or smell like decaying matter.  However, we have discovered many smell delightful! 

Growing Tips
Bulbophyllums are easy to grow, preferring to stay moist and generally favoring warm temperatures. They thrive in intermediate (winter) to hot (summer) conditions and grow well in intermediate light, although they can tolerate low light (resulting in fewer flowers).  Think 🤔 shady, warm moist jungle. Bulbophyllum do not like going bone dry. For those in baskets, water frequently from all sides. Bulbophyllums enjoy regular fertilizer; we use spray fertilizer. They can be potted in bark, moss, or a combination of the two, but we don't recommend it. Due to their short roots, baskets or very shallow pots work best for these orchids.  We like mounting almost all of our bulbophyllum. This really helps with those that have pendant blooms and it mimics natural conditions. Plus, bulbophyllum like to creep and spread and will quickly move outside of a pot.
